A flood isn’t the only thing that causes water damage – those constant drips, trickles and puddles are often signs that damage is being done and disaster’s about to strike. This is why Eve Water Guard uses a sensing cable to monitor every critical nook and cranny of your home. You can also extend it to suit and lay it any which way you want.

So, if the worst happens and any part of the sensing cable gets wet, the siren on Eve Water Guard will go off, the accessory will flash red and, thanks to HomeKit’s special support for sensors, a notification will be displayed on your iPhone (if you’ve got a home hub). This makes Eve Water Guard an unparalleled water leak detector in terms of its full range of functions, wide-area monitoring and the reassuring feeling it offers.

Read on to learn more about what functions Eve Water Guard has and how you can use this accessory.

Siren, flashing light and text message alert

As soon as water penetrates the sensing cable’s braiding, the 100 dB siren on Eve Water Guard will sound and the LEDs on the rear of the accessory will flash red to serve as an additional visual alert. The red LEDs will continue to flash for as long as water is detected, but you can mute the siren via the Eve app – which is a breeze to do as the option pops up the moment you launch the app, provided of course a leak has been detected.

HomeKit or the home hub (HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV) will also provide a key additional alert in the form of a notification if the alarm gets triggered. This means you can have notifications sent to your iPhone so you’ll never have to be greeted by the worrying sight of water leaking everywhere should you be away from the source of the leak at the time or out of earshot of the siren.

All you have to do is make sure you’ve set up your HomeKit hardware correctly in the Home app: Go to the Home or Rooms view. Now use a 3D Touch or Haptic Touch gesture on the Eve Water Guard icon and then tap the gear icon in the detail view. Tap Status and Notifications, then activate Notifications on This iPhone.

Sensing cable, placement and testing

Thanks to electronic wizardry, Eve Water Guard knows the instant the sensing cable gets wet (for the techies out there: Eve Water Guard uses a resistive sensor whereby the ohmic resistance is changed if water penetrates the cable). Thanks to this principle, you can extend the sensing cable to an incredible 150 meters using the two-meter extension cables – enabling Eve Water Guard to monitor every nook and cranny of even the largest rooms or spaces, and not just the area directly beneath the wall outlet.

Hooking up the sensing cable to the base unit as well as connecting each section of cable couldn’t be easier either thanks to the 3.5 mm jack plug connectors, which ensure everything connects together securely and reliably for total peace of mind.

You can also lay the cable any which way you want: Lay it in a circle to monitor your washing machine, clothes dryer, pumps and other free-standing appliances; loop it under your sink; or run it along the wall parallel to your basement windows. Once you’ve laid the sensing cable and added Eve Water Guard to your HomeKit home, the next step is to test the alarm.

You can test the alarm standing near the base unit without fear of your ears being blown off as the siren will ring out at a softer level.

To get started, open the Eve app and tap Settings > Accessories > Eve Water Guard > Alarm Test > Start Alarm Test. You will then see a notification saying that HomeKit will consider the test alarm to have been triggered by an actual leak and so will send notifications to all connected and invited people. As such, be sure to pre-warn everyone that you’re about to run a test, then tap Continue.

You now have a three-minute window in which to wet the sensing cable to check the acoustic and visual alarms as well as the HomeKit notification function. If necessary, turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on your iPhone. This will enable you to check your home hub is working correctly and ensure you receive notifications even when you’re not at home.

Now simply plunge part of the sensing cable into a bowl of water.

The alarm will now go off: You’ll hear the siren; you’ll see the base unit flash red; and you’ll be notified by the Eve app and receive a HomeKit notification on your iPhone. Tap Done and the Eve app will end the procedure and log that you have completed the alarm test successfully. You can view the log by tapping the list icon in the detail view of Eve Water Guard.

By default, the Eve app will prompt you to retest the alarm every three months. However, you can customize this interval and opt to be notified every 30 days, 3 months, 6 months or annually.

No bridge or starter set required.

Eve Water Guard works right out of the box, eliminating the need for additional accessories. You’ll need a home hub (HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV) to receive notifications and run automations.

Increase the reach of your devices

Add HomePod mini or the new Apple TV 4K to your home and your latest-generation Thread-enabled Eve Water Guard will be able to communicate via Thread – the mesh network that reaches even the farthest corners of your abode. This happens automatically without you needing to configure anything. Full Thread Devices (FTDs), such as Eve Water Guard or Eve Energy, can act as a router node and relay data packets from other Thread devices.

To view the structure of your Thread network and see where you can make improvements, simply go to the Settings area of the Eve app and tap Thread Network. Among other things, you’ll be able to tell which nodes your Thread devices use to communicate and whether you can further improve the stability and reach of your network and devices by adding one more FTD or moving one to a better location.

Hallo,
vier EVE Energys in Betrieb. In den Accessories werden alle Geräte angezeigt. Warum funktioniert die Alarmierung nicht?

Hi
I'm thinking of using this to monitor an external manhole outside of a basement for potential backflow / flooding. Can I use a standard audio phono extension cable to reach the manhole (therefore avoiding false alarms from rainfall) and coil and fix the white detection cable inside the manhole, above the usual water level?

Hi Anthony! Several customers use audio cables for this purpose, no problem. Best regards, Volker

I ran the test for my new eve water guard. How do I remove the alert from my apple home kit summary and from my eve ap. Neither returned to normal status after the test. Also not having a ground plug seems to limit units ability to be plugged into my outlet that is in the sink area. Disposal with ground works fine, Eve does not

Chris

Great device!

A few suggestions:

- Good if the siren/sound could be disabled.
- Also, by default, it would be good if the alarm started on the not-so-loud sound level, and stayed there for ~3 minutes, before increasing in sound level. That way, all the false alarms would be less painful. Would still also want the ability to disable the siren altogether.
- As SEO work, and as usefulness to your customers, you should ask people to send in their stories, along with pictures, and info on what they've cooked up. For example, I connected Y to X, and setup a scene that does ABC. You'd then post the good ones on your website, both as inspiration, and by using customers own words (at least partly), you'd get a lot of SEO content and more traffic.

Regards,
Alexander

Unfortunately this is a deal breaker, and from my point of view a bad product decision. I live in an apartment and loud alarm is not welcomed and definitely annoying for all my neighbors. And I expect most of people living in apartments don’t want loud siren due to neighbors and want instead smart capabilities like notification or alarm on phone, not device.

Can you the Eve Guard be used in the opposite way? For example, keep it in a water tank and use an automation to automatically fill the tank once Eve Guard detects a dry environment?

Hello! No, this is not possible, sorry. The trigger is the detection of water by the sensor cable, it does not work the other way round. Best regards, Volker

Hallo. Was kann man hier tun?

Hallo C!

Hello, will be be possible to use the sensor cable for an outdoor area? I have my water tank on the roof top where it’s difficult to monitor any water leak. Was thinking to run your sensor cable all the way from roof top to inside the house. Distance might be 20 to 30 meter.

I'm a bit sad that I just purchased 2 Eve Water Guards when it seems like thread enabled ones are imminent. Any possibility that existing customer will be offered discounts if the new ones come out within a year of purchase?
Also, I would love to see an Eve Water Guard that runs on batteries. I don't have an outlet near my water heater and I would love to use Eve Water Guard vs a competitor. Thanks!

Hello! Apple changed it how alarm accessories show up in the app Home with iOS 14.2. You'll find it in it's room in the row on top in a circle. This was Apples decision and applies to all alarm sensors from all vendors. Best regards, Volker

Hello Bruce! Apple changed this in Home with iOS 14.2. In Home open the room Eve Water Guard is mounted it and look for a circle alarm tile on the top. Now way anymore to see alarm sensors or contact sensors or even those with temperature as a tile we know. Nothing we can do about, please complain with Apple here. Best regards, Volker

I would like to propose this product to our 6 story , 36 condo association. Beach condo , so residents are sporadic. Sensor would be great to set in the closet which houses both the air conditioner unit which sits above the water heater.

This could work wonders IF our security service could be the one notified whenever any of the 36 sensors goes off.

Is that a possibility ?

Hello Albert!
Notifications in HomeKit are only sent to the iOS device, that "owns" the accessory or is a guest to the owner. So yes, would be possible in theory but the security service would need an iOS device or a Mac.
And it may be a challenge to get them all connected.
This is not a topic for the blog, you may want to contact me direct at [email protected]

Hello,
Say I have a Home Hub.
1) Is it possible to use the Eve Water Guard as trigger directly from the Home Hub?
2) When using it as a trigger in an automation setup from the Eve app, will this automation appear and be editable within Home Hub?
3) Is it possible to get notified without setting off the alarm?
Reply
Oct 8, 2020
Hello Hymced!
For receiving any notification while on the road a home hub is mandatory. We recommend using an Apple TV 4/4K or HomePod.
Automations are created in Home or Eve and then transferred and executed on the home hub. Detecting Leak from Eve Water Guard can be a trigger for like turning on lights, turning off power in a scene. Either create an automation/rule in Eve or in Home, please don't mix in one automation but you may use both apps.
You'll get notified (alarm) once a leak is detected. Please check more on:
https://help.evehome.com/hc/en-us/articles/360014746239-Alarms-and-muting-alarms
You may turn off the alarm in the app Eve only, not in Home from Apple.

Thank you for the details. I have read the article you pointed out, but I want to clarify how "notification" and "alarm" works. You say: "You'll get notified (alarm) once a leak is detected". As I understand it, once the Eve Water Guard is activated / in detection mode, the 100 dB siren will trigger upon detection, and a *regular iOS* notification is send (which you call "alarm"). Am I getting that correctly? Do you have pictures to illustrate that please? Is this alarm notification setup automatically or one must create an automation whose action will be sending a notification upon detection? You also say: "Detecting Leak from Eve Water Guard can be a trigger for like turning on lights, turning off power in a scene". And what about sending a notification? Is it possible to automate the action "send a notification to someone" upon detection?

There is a underlaying big question I am trying to solve. Here it goes: I live in a apartment, and I fear that if a 100 dB siren sounds, if, for some reason, I am not able to mute it via the Eve app rapidly, neighbors could easily after sometime call the firemen. And they could break down my expansive door just to shut it down... Whereas if I had been able to setup a notification without triggering the siren, I could have asked someone with my keys to check what's happening inside...

Hello Hymced!
To get notifications you have to set this in the app Home from Apple and would need an Apple TV 4/4K or HomePod to receive it even when remote.
The 100 dB alarm on the accessory will start once a leak is detected, This can't be disabled. The notifications you get on the iOS accessory is a HomeKit based notification and this can be disabled.

Can you silent the alarm when you are not home? Also, can it just be a notification on your phone without an alarm as well, can the alarm on the device be turned off altogether?
